Centuries ago the River Bódva followed picturesque bends and ran in numerous branches. The river was regulated at the end of the 19th century during the ownership of the Coburg princes. This was followed by another regulation in 1969, when the Bódva oxbow reached its present form. As a result of the revitalisation of the Bódva oxbow, new habitats were created. Thus, the area is now part of Natura 2000, the interconnected European ecological network established by the European Union.
